Increase your Pinterest traffic with the right keywords

Learn how to boost your Pinterest traffic by using the right keywords, and optimise your posts to reach more followers and drive engagement.

There is plenty of traffic to be gained for your webshop from Pinterest, but to tap into this potential, you need to carefully consider which keywords are relevant and align with your business.

In 2021, 71% of all searches on Pinterest consisted of queries between 1 and 3 words. That is not a lot, which is why it pays to take an extra look at which keywords are actually being used.

These are typically very specific searches such as “children’s desk chair” or “wedding decorations”, which attract most of the clicks. What they have in common is that they are short and precise.

For you, this means you should consider which keywords your target audience would be searching for if they were looking for exactly your product.

Once you have found your main keywords, you can dive into Pinterest’s search function on your home feed, which helps you identify long-tail search terms.

Start by typing in your main keyword and search for it. In our example, we use desk chair.

Even at this stage, you will be shown some search terms that may be worth using if they match your product.

After you press enter, you will see a range of appealing Pins, but you will also see what others have searched for alongside your keyword. Select the best options and click through to them, after which new search terms will appear.

If you start to see fewer suggestions for search terms, it may be because the search volume for these terms is low, so it may not be worthwhile to pursue them further.

Use several methods to find keywords

You can also use the ABC method – simply enter your main keyword, press the space bar, then type A and see what appears.

Note down the best and, most importantly, most relevant keywords. Then delete A and type B instead, and continue until you have enough keywords or have gone through the entire alphabet.

REMEMBER: Pinterest suggests many good keywords that could be useful for your business. However, always ask yourself: “Would my target audience use this search term?” Otherwise, you may get many impressions, but no clicks from your actual audience.

You have found your keywords – what now?

Now you have collected plenty of valuable search terms for your Pins, but how should you use them?

Here is what you should do.

Just like Google, Pinterest can tell if you are simply stuffing your content with keywords. Therefore, it is important to use them to create relevant and informative text that adds value for your target audience.

You can also benefit from using your search terms in your Pinterest board and your Pin titles.

Remember: Your Pin title should be between 6-40 characters, and your description between 6-50 characters, so there is plenty of room to include the right and relevant keywords.

One last tip

By now, you should have a strong list of relevant and valuable keywords and terms that match your target audience – so it is time to start creating your Pins!

But here is one last tip before you get started with your Pins.

It is a very good idea to add your logo to your Pins to build brand recognition with your audience, but the placement is important.

My colleague Anders has written a blog post about this here.

Enjoy your Pinterest adventure!
